Anna Mbatha was married to Patrick Mbatha, a black south African doctor while she worked as a nurse. Her husband was a member of African National Congress and an activist in south Africa against apartheid and had to run away for security. They had a daughter Gugu Mbatha Raw on 21 April 1983. and unfortunately separated after a year and Anna took the child and raised her in Witney, Oxfordshire while coparenting with her father. Her daughter was part of the local acting group Drama scope and would appear in the pantomime at Oxford Playhouse every year from the age of eleven years and joined Oxford Youth Music Theatre in her teens as a dancer and singer.

Anna Mbatha’s daughter Gugu Mbatha Raw is a famous fil and stage actress popularly known for her role in a science fiction TV show Doctor Who on BBC Channel. She s been featured on films like Beyond the Lights, a romantic drama, Belle, undercover, touch and Larry Crowne.
